To view the whole file with all the notes and links on Getting to know your Windows PC, just click the  PDF  (Portable Document Format) icon  below.  Once it opens in the Adobe PDF Reader, you can even download it to your computer.

Starting “Getting to know your PC”

Here is an overview of the steps needed to display important icons on your desktop and creating a new user “Practice” for the purpose of practicing without messing up your existing setup.

To show “Computer” icon ( and other icons ):

 

Win 10:     RIGHT CLICK Desktop

                  Click Personalize > Themes >

                  Desktop Icon Settings

Win 7:       RIGHT CLICK Desktop

                  Click Personalize > Change desktop icons

                 

To:   Sign out (Win 10)    Log off (Win 7)   

 

Win 10:     Alt + F4, use ↑↓ keys to select Sign out

 

Win 7:       same as for Win 10

Creating a new “Practice” user:

Win 10:      RIGHT CLICK This PC

                   Click Manage > Local Users and Groups >

                   Users > More Actions > New User

Win 7:        RIGHT CLICK Computer icon

                    .. same as Win 10 ..

To see what version you have (all Windows)

RIGHT CLICK the Computer icon, Click Properties

To prevent Desktop icons from aligning themselves automatically.  ( You want to re-arrange them yourself ).

Win 10 & Win 7:

                  RIGHT CLICK Desktop

                  Click View

                  and make sure "Auto arrange icons" is                          UNchecked!
